There are no meetings this week for either the Asheville City Council or the Buncombe County Commission.

GREEN:

Things that sound like a step in the right direction

Last week, the Commission voted to join an effort to restore the Cherokee name, Kuwohi, to the mountain currently called Clingman’s Dome. (You can read more about the issue here.)

This is part of an ongoing effort by the County Commission, often alongside the leadership of the County Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger, to partner with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in telling a more accurate and inclusive story about the history of the colonization of this region and the displacement of indigenous people. As the Reparations process proceeds, we hope to see this interest in corrective history continue and expand to include a more complete account of the experiences of the Black people who have lived in this region.

Things to do

We encourage you to reach out to the Buncombe County Commission via their contact page and show some appreciation for their vote for this resolution, which supports the reclamation of this mountain’s original indigenous name.
